An existing two story facility owned by Norfolk & Southern was purchased and renovated into an information services facility that supports the entire data system for Carilion Healtcare's hospitals, physicians' offices, and ancillary support facilities. To minimize the construction cost, the floor plan layout was designed to utilize as much of the existing floor plan as possible. The facility contains a 12,000 square-foot computer data center flanked on two sides by staff offices training and support spaces. The layout provides staff direct access to the data center while training rooms are positioned adjacent to the building entrance for visitor access. The facility is outfitted with redundant electrical and mechanical systems to minimize the possibility of a computer system failure. The electrical system includes parallel switchgear and UPS systems.
